Subject: The Charles W. Hass Memorial Scholarship

Late on Monday, Drew Mattison (Kappa Kappa Psi pledge brother of Charles) contacted me about establishing a memorial to Charles. The two of us received amazing support for the idea, and many, many valuable suggestions. Finally, last night I contacted Mrs. Hass and had a tearful conversation remembering her son. I asked her if she would like to establish a memorial, and suggested a few ideas that seemed feasible.

Mrs. Hass has asked us to establish the Charles W. Hass Memorial Scholarship at the Purdue University Department of Bands. Although the details are still to be worked out, we envision this scholarship presented to a person within the Purdue University Bands (or possibly incoming freshman) who exudes the same spirit for life, music, education, and leadership that Charles possessed. Charles lived most of his life serving others, whether with a listening ear, a room to sleep in, a bit of advice, a gentle 'push' to follow our dreams, or a simple hug and smile. I think Charles would be pleased to continue helping in this way. He would delight in knowing that this gift will recognize those who love music and life, and may help someone realize just how special they are and their potential to make a difference.

We have established an account at Purdue University to accept any donations you would like to make. The hope is to raise enough money that the scholarship amount can be awarded using the interest earnings, and the principal will never be touched. In this way, the scholarship will continue years to come. We have been told we need a minimum of $20,000 in order to do this. This equates to approximately $100 per person. The amount of the scholarship will depend on the donation amount.

Please remember this is an invitation to donate. Do so only if you feel moved toward it and feel good about it. Charles cared for others every day, and he knew a million other ways to do it than with money! I would also invite you to forward this email to anyone who is not in the "To:" header and is not listed on the listserv as of 2/1/01. I would also invite you to send a card to the Hass family telling them of your donation in Charles' memory.

Thank you for the outpouring of support and love for Charles. We will keep all of you on this list updated with the donation totals and the details as they develop. Please feel free to email me with your questions.

"Charles, we will miss you so much. We hope you would be proud to know that your memory will continue to serve others. We will strive always to spread your love of life to everyone we meet, and to keep in touch with all of those important to us, as you did. We look forward to seeing you again someday. Save us a seat at the party, and save a smile and hug for us all."
